Scandinavian Club Festivals

MidSommer - We celebrate the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.  Traditionally, it was on June 23 but has been moved to June 21st.  The club follows the Danish tradition of burning a witch made of cloth and straw and the Swedish tradition of dancing around a maypole covered with flowers and greens.

Fishfest - This tradition is a take off of the Swedish tradition of eating crayfish to mark the end of summer.  The festival is normally held in August.  Here in Hawaii, we have substituted fish and shrimp for the crayfish.

Santa Lucia - We have a festival marking the darkest day of the year (December 13th). The festival commemorates St. Lucy, a Roman girl who was martyred in the first century.  Girls dress up in white gowns (sometimes with candles in their hair) and promenade singing "Santa Lucia" and other christmas songs.
